The end is nigh...

Hey guys, its sheems here.

I am currently sitting in my living room, waiting for some inspiration for this blog entry and I must admit I am really struggling. I feel that my struggle is partly related to the fact that my housemates have decided to throw things at me. Its seems that I will always be a victim of abuse (physical and verbal (not by my family)), wherever I go. Ok, I think I am safe now. They have stopped throwing things :)

I guess I should start by explaining the title of my blog, "The end is nigh...". As most of you know, I have moved back to Cardiff and have started my final, yes, final year in the Welsh School of Pharmacy. I can't believe it really. I didn't think I would survive a week at university but here I am. I feel so old now, introducing myself to the freshers as a fourth year but I am filled with new strength and courage because I know that after this year I will have no more revision or exams. I will now describe the events during my first two weeks in an organised fashion.

Fresher's week

I can confidently say that fresher's week has been the most boring week of my life. Due to the fact that I am not actually a fresher, there wasn't a great deal for me to do. However, I think the most exciting (I am contradicting myself aren't I?) part of the week was going to the societies fayre, where I received several freebies. It was amazing. My favourite freebie was the dental pack, which included a decent toothbrush, a mini colgate sensitive toothpaste and a sachet of colgate mouthwash. I love dental stuff. And I got a few free pens too, which is great because I forgot to buy some this year. That is really all I have to say about freshers week.

Pharmacy lectures begin...

I can't begin to tell you how happy I am to start lectures. You are probably thinking I am a super geek now but I love being busy! This week, we have had a series of introductory lectures for our modules and there was one introductory speech which really stood out for me. I honestly felt as if I was being spoken to personally. For the last 2 years, Dr Daniels (looks like Santa) has given us a speech saying, "If you thought last year was hard, you ain't seen nothing yet", which is always a joy to hear. But this year, he didn't say any of that! Instead, he lectured us on our final year project...

The time has come for me when I have to choose the title of my final year project and I have to submit my top 5 titles next week. Dr Daniels was explaining the selection process when he spoke these imortal words:

"Now, you should know that you can choose to have a lab based or a non-lab based project. For those of you who only need to look at a test tube for it to shatter into pieces and who are inclined to pour things on the floor, you may want to choose a non-lab based project".

And at that point I just smiled knowingly and shook my head in agreement to his speech. Surely, he was talking to me. I wonder if I can ever reach that stage where I can break equipment by staring at it. Last year, I had a test in one of the labs and at the end, when I was putting my books back, I managed to knock over several bottles. My tutor said, "You didn't even make anything!" I really am that bad. But considering this, I am actually going to opt for a lab based project, mainly because the others are computer and maths related. I am most excited by this particular project where you take the fluorescent protein out of a jellyfish and you inject it into the cell. Then you look at the protein with a microscope to see what the cell has done with it. Well, I find it interesting anyway. I must admit, this is turning out to be the geekiest entry I have ever written.

Other stuff

Other than lectures, I have been enjoying myself by watching certain tv programmes. My favourites at the moment are X factor and...wait, that's it actually. I am really looking forward to next week when Strictly Come Dancing starts. And Casualty. I must watch Casualty.

Summary

To conclude, these last two weeks have been both boring and interesting and this is probably my most boring entry. I bet you are glad you read it now. I am still trying to think about all the interesting things that we did in Rome so I can write an entry about that. I think that is more appealing.

Love you all,

Sheems xxx
